Poll #976892 How does the saying go?

When someone fails at something, but you note that they tried really hard, do you:

give them an "A" for effort; at least in the 'Effort' category they did really well.

Why does hardly anyone look you in the eye as you pass by on the sidewalk? Is it just too much of a committment? Would that mean that they'd have to acknowledge that you exist? That they might even be inclined to smile or <gasp> say hello?!
